WELCOME TO MS. TAMMARO'S CLASS
Dear Parent(s) and Future First Grader,
Congratulations on a successful year in kindergarten! The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the many new and exciting things you will be doing and learning next year in first grade. We are going to have a fantastic year!
In first grade, our language arts program involves a multitude of supported reading and writing activities that help you become more comfortable readers and writers. Some of these activities include read alouds, morning messages, shared language, I Can Reads, daily journal entries, class books and reading circles/literature sets. You have been learning the importance of sight words in kindergarten. Keep working on these words, for half of everything we read are sight words!
If you love math, then Miss Tammaro’s first grade is the place for you! In math, we will be working on many new concepts through hands-on, manipulative materials. We will study units on addition, subtraction, geometry, fractions, money, time, and place value. During our daily lessons, you will have the opportunity to become a math leader! If you are setting a positive example for the entire class, you may help your table to earn tallies on your table tally chart. Once your table earns ten tallies, special leader prizes are awarded.
Our first grade social studies and science curriculum will be incorporated throughout our daily lessons. This will include many hands-on projects and craft activities. Science units will include discoveries about various plants and animals, properties, Growing Healthy (the human body), earthworms, and plants/seeds. In social studies, we will study safety, holiday histories, important Americans that have shaped our country, shelter, neighborhoods, communities, and citizenship/leadership.
Once a week, you will have a “Choose A Job” time. During this time you may visit some of the centers in our classroom and choose a job! Some jobs include building with blocks and Legos, playing games such as Memory or Candyland, making books/cards/pictures in the creators’ corner, or perhaps putting on a puppet show or a play in our dramatic theatre area. Sometimes, we watch a video as a whole class with a special snack. The choice will be yours!
In order to be prepared for the first week of school as a first grader, please bring in your school supplies. Also, read the important tips and reminders page included. See you in September!
Wishing you all the best,
Ms. Tammaro
